Place Facts Plugin

Help & Documentation

About This Plugin

Place Facts uses AI to retrieve interesting, obscure, and fun facts about places around the world. At a regular interval, your TRMNL device will show a different sub-location within your configured place and share a fascinating fact about it.

AI may make mistakes, always verify facts from this plugin with trusted sources before sharing or acting on them.

How It Works

The plugin adapts its behaviour based on the type of place you configure:

  • Continent (e.g. "Europe", "South America") - picks a place within the continent and shares a fact about it
  • Country (e.g. "France", "Japan") - picks a random place within the country and shares a fact about it
  • City, region, or county (e.g. "New York City", "Yorkshire", "Tuscany") - picks a random point of interest within the area and shares a fact about it

The place type is detected automatically, you just type the name.

Images

The plugin tries to find the best image for each place using multiple sources, in this priority order:

  1. Wikipedia - a thumbnail from the relevant Wikipedia article
  2. Openverse - a Creative Commons licensed photo
  3. Map - a static map centred on the location

The first available source is used as the primary image.

QR Code

A QR code may be generated and displayed on the screen. Scan it with your phone to read more about the place.
